Website: How much will this cost me?

There are two types of costs associated with having a website; once-off costs and ongoing costs. Let's discuss the once-off costs first.

Initial Website Costs

The once-off costs will be associated with having your website designed and built. Other possible once-off costs would be market research, feasability studies, and content writing. You can approach the website build in two ways, either have someone design it and someone else build it, or have the same company design and build it. This is purely preference on your behalf.
The costs of having a website built can range from €1,000 to many €1,000's. Be wary, you will get what you paid for, the cheapest is not always the best option. However, the most expensive is also not always the best option. Shop around, look at a business's past projects, talk to people who have used them in the past. They will usually have a portfolio on their website, so it will be easy to find out who their past clients are.

Ongoing Website Costs

The ongoing costs of having a website are domain name renewal, website hosting and possibly website maintenance. The domain name must be renewed yearly, but you can usually purchase a domain name for up to 9 years.

Website Hosting

Website hosting is a monthly expense. However, the hosting company will usually give you a discount for paying for a year in advance. Hosting costs will vary depending on your website needs.

Website Maintenance

An optional cost is website maintenance. You need to keep you website updated on a regular basis or else you will lose search engine ranking and customers. A stagnant website gets old fast. You can pay a company to keep it maintained with content or you can have a Content Management System (CMS) installed and maintain it yourself. Having your own CMS system will cost you up front but will save you in the long run. However, don't forget to calculate in time costs to update your own website.
