E-Commerce Law in Ireland


The Electronic Commerce Act, 2000 was brought into law on 20th September 2000. It provides legal recognition for electronic signatures, electronic writing and electronic contracts to ensure that they will not be treated any different under law than their paper counterparts.

  • The law states that any contract that is agreed electronically is enfoceable by law.
  • Electronic records can replace now replace any requirements of retaining paper records.
  • Electronic documents are admissible as evidence
